or drop them here
The Google Takeout zip with your Fitbit data, or the files from Takeout/Fitbit/Global Export Data
- Runs in your browser
- Nothing is uploaded
- No signup
- Free
Fitbit data now comes through Google Takeout, and it arrives as a folder with a separate JSON file for every day of every metric: steps-2024-01-05.json, heart_rate-2024-01-05.json, sleep-2024-01-05.json and so on. Years of wear means thousands of files and millions of minute-by-minute rows. Opening them one at a time is hopeless. This tool reads the whole Takeout zip in your browser, adds up each day, and gives you one workbook.
It is also the easy way to keep your history when leaving Fitbit for Garmin, Apple Watch or anything else: a daily spreadsheet travels anywhere.
How to export your Fitbit data from Google Takeout
- 1
Go to takeout.google.com
Sign in with the Google account your Fitbit is linked to.
- 2
Deselect all, then tick only Fitbit
Click “Deselect all” first, scroll to Fitbit, tick it. Leaving everything ticked exports your whole Google account.
- 3
Choose file type and size
Keep .zip. Set the size to 10 GB or 50 GB so the export arrives as one file rather than many parts.
- 4
Create export and wait for the email
Google emails a download link, from minutes to a day later depending on how much data you have.
- 5
Drop the Takeout zip here
The tool finds the Fitbit folder inside. If the export came in several parts, drop them all at once.
What is inside the file
Inside Takeout/Fitbit/, the Global Export Data folder holds the daily files: steps, calories, distance, altitude and active-minute files with one row per minute; heart_rate files with a reading every few seconds; resting_heart_rate per day; sleep logs with stages (deep, light, REM, wake) and efficiency; exercise logs; weight logs. Other folders hold CSV summaries such as daily SpO2, heart rate variability and sleep scores, which are included as their own sheets.
What you get
- Daily summary: date, steps, calories, distance, active and sedentary minutes, average / min / max heart rate, resting heart rate, sleep hours
- Sleep: each night with start, end, hours asleep and in bed, efficiency, and deep / light / REM / wake minutes
- Exercise: every logged activity with duration, distance, calories, heart rate and steps
- Weight log, plus SpO2, HRV and Sleep score sheets where Fitbit provided CSVs
- Charts: steps per day, resting heart rate, sleep per night, weight
Limits to know about
- Minute-level rows are summed into days and not exported individually; a year of per-minute steps alone is half a million rows.
- Fitbit writes distance and altitude in units that vary by account setting and export version. The Daily summary labels them as export units; compare one day with the app to confirm.

Questions
How do I export Fitbit data to Excel?
Request a Takeout export with only Fitbit selected, download the zip, and drop it here. The tool merges the daily JSON files into a Daily summary sheet plus Sleep, Exercise and Weight sheets. Download the Excel workbook.
My Fitbit export is stuck or huge
Takeout can take a day for big accounts, and the zip is often several gigabytes because heart-rate files are large. Choose a larger maximum file size so it arrives as one zip rather than many parts; either way, all parts can be dropped here together.
Can I move my Fitbit history to Garmin?
Garmin Connect does not import Fitbit files directly. Convert here to keep a complete daily spreadsheet of your history; for activities, some third-party services convert Fitbit exercise logs to formats Garmin accepts.
Where is my sleep data?
In the Sleep sheet: one row per sleep log with stages, efficiency and timing. Naps are marked separately from main sleep.
Is my data uploaded?
No. The zip is read inside your browser. Nothing leaves your device.
