Most JSON-to-Excel converters choke on real files: nested objects end up as [object Object], arrays inside records disappear, and anything over a few megabytes has to be uploaded to a server. This one reads the file in your browser, finds every list of records at any depth, and gives each one its own sheet with nested fields flattened into parent.child columns.

It works for the Income Tax Department’s AIS JSON, for exports from apps, and for API responses you saved to disk. JSON Lines files (one object per line) and zips containing many JSON files are accepted too.

How to convert JSON to Excel

  1. 1

    Choose the JSON file

Click Choose file or drop it on the box. Several files or a zip can be dropped at once; each becomes its own set of sheets.

  2. 2

    Check the sheets

Every list of records in the file is shown as a tab, named after where it sat in the JSON. The first 100 rows preview; the download has everything.

  3. 3

    Download

Excel gives you all sheets in one workbook. CSV gives one sheet at a time. JSON gives the flattened tables back as JSON.

What is inside the file

JSON has two shapes: objects (named fields) and arrays (lists). A spreadsheet needs rows and columns, so the converter treats every array of objects as a table, each object as a row, and each field as a column. A field whose value is another object is split into dotted columns such as address.city. A field that is a list of plain values is joined with semicolons. A field that is a list of objects becomes a separate sheet, and the parent row shows how many items it had.

What you get

  • One sheet per list of records found in the file, with columns in the order they first appear
  • An Overview sheet of top-level fields when the file is a single object
  • Numbers kept as numbers so Excel can sum them; everything else as text
  • Excel, CSV or JSON download

Limits to know about

  • Very large files are limited by your browser’s memory. A 200 MB JSON works on a laptop; phones may struggle past 50 MB.
  • Excel sheets hold about one million rows. Longer lists are exported in full to CSV.

Privacy

This tool runs entirely in your browser. The file is read on your device by a background script, the result is built on your device, and nothing is transmitted to us or to anyone else. You can load this page, turn off your internet connection and the tool keeps working. There is no account and no quota.

Questions

Does it work with the Income Tax AIS JSON file?

Yes. Download your Annual Information Statement in JSON from the income tax portal and drop it here. Each information category (TDS, SFT, interest, dividends and so on) becomes its own sheet.

Why do I get more than one sheet?

Because the JSON held more than one list. For example an orders file might contain a list of orders and, inside each order, a list of items. You get an Orders sheet and an Items sheet.

What happens to nested objects?

They become dotted columns. A field customer with name and email inside becomes customer.name and customer.email.

Can I convert JSON Lines (.jsonl)?

Yes. If the file is not a single JSON document, the tool tries reading it as one object per line.

Is my data uploaded?

No. Parsing and conversion run in your browser. Tax statements and other private files never leave your device.
